The
Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) is a
self-assessment tool that helps a person to understand his own
personal preferences with respect to gathering and absorbing
information, processing information, making decisions, interacting
with people and driving toward closure, among other things. It
is an instrument that is frequently used in the work environment for
team building, leadership development and enhancing interpersonal
relationships (e.g. communication, conflict management, decision
making). It is based on the theories of Carl Jung and is one
of the most reliable and widely used instruments of its type in the
world.
When
it comes to MBTI, there are no right or wrong answers.
The instrument measures preferences by personality type.
Things like how you prefer to take in information, how you prefer to
process that information, the extent to which you prefer to be open
and flexible versus push toward closure can all have an impact in
your interactions with others in business and social environments.
Differences on these and other dimensions of the model are what can
lead to poor communication, lack of understanding and conflict -
which can, in turn, can lead to less than optimal individual and
team performance.
Lynn Reed is an expert in the application of the
MBTI
in organization, team and individual effectiveness processes.
He explains the model in clear, easy to assimilate terms and makes
it come alive through humor and anecdotes. Participants
quickly come to understand the impact and implications of their
preferences both in terms of how they perceive others and in terms
of how others perceive them. Many participants have called
learning about the MBTI from Lynn Reed "a life changing experience."
We
offer presentation of the MBTI as either a standalone event,
or as a powerful component of several programs designed to improve
team and client interactions, and individual effectiveness.
Programs include:
Building Partnership with Clients
-
A two-day program designed to improve the
relationship-building process between the service/product provider
and the client. Covers the business case for building lifetime
customer relationships, a four-step model to build partnerships,
communications skills, the impact of personality type on client
communications, influence skills (using
MBTI)
and conflict resolution (using
Thomas-Kilmann).
Useful for anyone dealing with internal or external clients.
Influencing Clients for Greater Impact
-
A one-day course
designed to help individuals and / or teams understand and apply
tools and techniques to improve the process of building and
improving client relationships. Delegates identify
specific “influence targets” (key clients or prospective clients)
and leverage the MBTI to develop specific communications strategies
to improve relationships with these target clients. The program is
appropriate for both external and internal client relationship
development.
Personal Effectiveness / Understanding Oneself: Going
to the Next Level
-
A one-day class for those who have completed the
initial education and validation in the MBTI and want to learn more.
Concepts around dominant, auxiliary, tertiary and inferior aspects
of type are included. Includes the application of the MBTI
Form Q with 20 sub-scales to explore and understand functions of
personality type at a greater
level of depth. Useful in coaching situations for managers at all levels.
Leadership &
Management Skills Program -
A two-day course focusing on
managing the team and people as individuals within the team. Covers basic
leadership and motivational theory, team effectiveness processes, establishing
goals for performance and development, performance management (providing
feedback, managing expectations) and coaching through Situational Leadership.
Managers examine their leadership style preferences and blind spots using a
diagnostic self-assessment instrument (also available for 360 feedback), and
through the application of the model develop better style flexibility and
effectiveness in managing and developing their people. The MBTI is
utilized to improve managers’ communication with their team members.
High Impact Team
Effectiveness -
A one-day
seminar leveraging the unique strengths of the MBTI to help team members improve interpersonal relationships by increasing knowledge of personality
type and the role it plays in the relationship development process.
Participants develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and potential
blind spots and learn to spot type in others in order to improve their
interaction skills. Useful for improving influence skills with clients,
managers, subordinates, team members and others throughout the organization.
Team Start -
A two-day process to define and
clarify the mission, vision, value proposition, goals, strategy, roles,
processes and relationships for newly formed or intact teams; the MBTI is
utilized to significantly enhance the quality of working relationships across
the team. Team Start is frequently employed to develop strategic direction for
an organization or to help accelerate a major transformation, starting with the
senior management team. This process can be extended as a large group
intervention to cover several hundred members of an organization as required.
