LRA Leadership Institute

NEXT GENERATION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

For the past 20 years, many of the largest, most influential organizations in the world have relied on LRA to help develop talent at the junior levels.  Usually through Graduate Training programs, LRA has played a key role in providing newly hired graduates with powerful thinking tools and interpersonal skills, tools and techniques that have given them a decided edge as they launch their careers in today's constantly changing, highly competitive and always challenging world.  These new leaders are typically among the top 3 - 5% of their classes at the best universities and graduate schools in the United States and abroad.  The feedback from these graduates on our programs is always outstanding - and frequently accompanied by comments such as, "If only I had learned about this in high school or college!"

Prompted by this recurring feedback and in recognition of the increasingly challenging and competitive world our young adults are now facing, we have now decided to offer these courses on a limited basis to a select group of highly motivated young adults looking to gain a competitive edge as they prepare to compete for colleges and step out into the real world.  The target audience for our programs is high school juniors and seniors through college, including both undergraduate and graduate students.

Note that these courses are designed for only those students mature enough to understand and leverage the many advantages that these tools and skills offer, including the ability to use personality type preferences to better understand and influence others, the ability to use proven tools to think creatively to develop new ideas or alternatives, and the ability to understand the impact of change and to adapt to it quickly.  These are powerful skills, all of which can be used in the home, academic, athletic, social, business and career environments.

Although the subject matter is not technically difficult, the days are fast-paced and the concepts thought-provoking and challenging.  They are very different from typical academic programs.  These courses are designed to equip future leaders with a set of powerful skills that will give them a decisive edge when dealing with the challenges ahead.  To ensure that participants get the maximum value from these courses, participation is limited to only those college and high school candidates who have the desire and potential to take their leadership skills to the next level.

Participants are expected to meet the following criteria:

    • High potential, success oriented, highly motivated

    • Desire to increase leadership potential

    • Possess a mature attitude toward learning

    • Possess and open mind and are ready to adsorb new concepts

    • Are willing to commit 100% of their energy to engage actively in the learning process

...all to advance their capability to perform in the increasingly competitive world landscape.

LRA Leadership Institute's Next Generation Leadership Program offerings

Influencing Others for Greater Impact - A two-day course designed to help individuals and / or teams understand and apply tools and techniques to improve the process of building and improving interpersonal relationships.  This program is designed to leverage knowledge of personality type preferences to give the participants a competitive edge in all types communication - especially face-to-face, a key element of effective networking skills.  Participants identify specific “influence targets” and leverage the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) to develop specific communications strategies to improve interpersonal relationships.  The program is highly effective at improving relationship development skills for such target areas as family, academic, social, athletic and employment environments.

The MBTI is a self-assessment tool that helps a person to understand his/her own personal preferences with respect to gathering and absorbing information, processing information, making decisions, interacting with people and driving toward closure, among other things.  It is an instrument that is frequently used in the work environment for team building, leadership development and enhancing interpersonal relationships (e.g. communication, conflict management, decision making).  It is based on the theories of Carl Jung and is one of the most reliable and widely used instruments of its type in the world.

When it comes to MBTI, there are no right or wrong answers.  The instrument measures preferences by personality type.  Things like how one prefers to take in information, how one prefers to process that information, the extent to which one prefers to be open and flexible versus push toward closure can all have an impact on interactions with others in business and social environments.  Differences on these and other dimensions of the model are what can lead to poor communication, lack of understanding and conflict - which can, in turn, lead to less than optimal individual and team performance.

Lynn Reed is an expert in the application of the MBTI in organization, team and individual effectiveness processes.  He explains the model in clear, easy to assimilate terms and makes it come alive through his extensive experience, knowledge of the underlying theory, humor and anecdotes.  Participants quickly come to understand the impact and implications of their preferences both in terms of how they perceive others and in terms of how others perceive them.

Influencing Others for Greater Impact: $1,195

Parallel Thinking and Lateral Thinking Skills - A three-day course designed to provide participants with a set of tools and structured techniques to methodically develop creative thinking skills in order to develop truly innovative ideas and solutions improve an individual's thinking capabilities and creativity.  The course also includes a segment on parallel thinking, a process that segments individual or group thinking that leads to significant increases in the efficiency and effectiveness of the thinking process.

Developed by Edward de Bono, these powerful techniques enable individuals, teams and entire organizations to significantly improve their ability to develop creative ideas.  In the business world, these tools are used for new product development, process improvement, customer focus and a variety of applications.

Parallel Thinking tools are designed to structure individual and group thinking in a way that increases in the efficiency and effectiveness of the thinking process.  They facilitate a major behavioral shift away from traditional thinking styles, which tend to be adversarial and/or hierarchical in nature.  Parallel Thinking equips one to lead and to contribute to team and group communication and decision-making processes with the confidence.  In addition, many organizations have discovered that Parallel Thinking techniques improve communication in both cross functional and multi-cultural settings, opening the door to Lateral Thinking.

Lateral Thinking tools are designed to address the limitations inherent in the asymmetric patterning system of the brain – this patterning system, while quite useful in every day life, is a major inhibitor of idea generation capability for most people. While many creative thinking practitioners are good at getting people excited about the topic of creativity, very few actually provide structured tools to improve the vital skill of idea generation capability.

Parallel Thinking and Lateral Thinking Skills: $1,995

Dynamics of Culture Change - A one-day course that explores the barriers to driving change and provides several models and techniques to accelerate and to leverage change at the individual and team levels.   Primary goals are: to clarify the nature of change and to minimize the adverse impact of change on performance at the individual and group levels.

The key to advancing in many organizations is to become more adaptive to change.  This has become an critical skill given the ever-increasing pace of change and the tumultuous  environment in which graduates will be expected to perform well.  Organizational, academic, social, technological changes will all occur - with increasing speed - and those hoping to perform well will be expected to adjust and to land on their feet.  This program provides models and techniques to do so.

Cost: $695    This course is not yet scheduled.
